You have the power to influence the types of products produced and sold.  Every time you buy you cast a vote of support for the product manufacturer and the store that sells it.  You can encourage the marketing of environmentally friendly products by buying them, and you may even save money in the process. Here's how . . .

  1. Avoid packaging by buying items loose or in bulk instead of in packages.
  2. Minimize packaging by buying concentrates and larger sizes.  One large container usually contains less raw materials than multiple smaller containers.
  3. Buy reusable and refillable containers.
  4. Buy products packaged in recycled content or in packaging that is recyclable in Palm Beach County's program.
  5. Buy safer natural alternatives to chemical cleaners, such as baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice.
Safe & Effective Alternatives
 
Below is a list of just a few non-toxic substitutes that can be used in place of common household products that are hazardous. By using them, you will reduce the amount of waster each of us creates every year, and you will save time and money. More importantly, you will be protecting yourself and family as well as the environment.
 

 

All Purpose Cleaners

Mix 3 tablespoons baking soda with one quart warm water

Oven Cleaner

Mix 3 tablespoons baking soda with one quart warm water. Sprinkle salt on spills while fresh; scrub

Glass & Window Cleaner

Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and one quart warm water. Wipe with newspaper.

Scouring Powder

Dip a damp cloth in baking soda and rub.

Floor Cleaner

Use soap and water or baking soda and water.

Drain Opener

Pour boiling water down the drain once a week for preventative maintenance. Use a plunger.

Chemical Fertilizers

Compost vegetable scraps and yard waste into a naturally rich soil. Call 697-2700 to find out when our next compost bin sale is scheduled.

Ant Control

Sprinkle cream of tartar along any path. They will not cross over it.

Air Fresheners/Deodorizers

Simmer cinnamon & cloves or place herbal bouquet in open dish.

Mildew Stain Remover

Use vinegar solution.

Chlorine Bleach

BORAX is good substitute
